Two Great Programs for Young Children Return
Once again, second graders are invited to come to the library in the month of October to be honored for learning to read! Thanks to a generous donation from the Marshall Rotary Club, though our “I Can Read @ Marshall Public Library” program, the library will give each child who participates a backpack with a pencil, a library card holder, a new book of the child’s choice, book marks, and more. Each child will read a few pages of a book to a library staff member, after which he or she will apply for a library card and have a photo taken.
Family Literacy Nights, our popular program especially for pre-schoolers, is funded by the Evelyn Knowles Foundation and Wal-Mart. Children ages 3, 4, and 5 year olds and a parent are invited to a short program on the third Thursday of each month beginning on September 16th. Our program leader, Marge Wilson, reads a story to the children and engages them with a finger play or song. Then parents and children do an interactive project relating to the story. Children take home a copy of the story plus an additional book if they have completed a monthly Preschool Reading Log. Please call to register!
Marshall Public Library is located at 612 Archer Avenue and is handicapped accessible. All children who attend Marshall Schools are eligible for a free library card. Programs are free and open to anyone. For more information, please contact the library at 217-826-2535. Gaslight Art Colony Marshall, IL 217-826-5914(w) 217-826-5371(h)
Summer Art Classes for Youth and Adults Gaslight Art Colony is pleased to announce Summer Art Classes for Youth. These classes will be taught by Maria Brothers of Terre Haute, In. Maria has been teaching Basic Drawing Techniques to our local young artists. The first class, Paint Adventures, is an ideal class for young artists ages 5-8. The children will engage in a new painting activity each day and learn about some famous painters in history as well. Some of these activities include large-scale self portraits, imaginary landscape, and abstract shape paintings. Kids will enjoy permissive mess making. An apron or old clothing is encouraged for this class. This class will start Saturday June 5, and will be a one hour class from 11 am – 12pm. And is a four week session ending June 26. The second class, Introduction to Painting is a more advanced class for middle school and high school age students with a dedicated interest in developing their skills and learning new ways to use color and light with possibilities beyond the brush. They will paint from subjects they see and subjects from their minds. Each student will be provided a stretched canvas. An apron or old clothing is encouraged. Starting Saturday June 5 this 2 hour class will be from 1-3pm. This class is also a four week session ending June 26.
Both classes will be fun for the youth and help to encourage their talent and interest of art taught by a professional. Advanced registration is encouraged so that material quantity is adequate for the demand of participants. Introduction to Water Color for adults will be taught by Thelma Sturgeon of Paris, IL.
These classes will be taught at our own Gaslight Art Colony, in the studio from 6-8:30pm and will run from June 15 – July 20.
